Centenary of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories 15 January 2002
Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865. Although educated in Britain, he started as a journalist in India in the 1880s and his early poems and stories were published for the Indian Railway Library. He later lived in Vermont, USA, but returned to Britain in 1896. Many of the Just So Stories were written in 1902 at Bateman's, a house near Burwash in Sussex, where he lived until his death in 1936. The house - which he recognised at first sight as having a good Feng Shui (of which he was a very early devotee) - is preserved by the National Trust as it was in Kipling's day. His best-known other works include The Jungle Book, Kim and Puck of Pook's Hill. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
The stamps were designed by Izhar Cohen, born in Israel in 1963 and educated in Jerusalem, Paris & London. He has worked for several major Israeli newspapers, and for L'Express and Le Figaro in Paris.
